Indoor vs Outdoor Ceremony: Setting the Stage for Your Dream Wedding

Every couple dreams of a wedding ceremony that reflects their vibe. But the very first decision - indoors or outdoors? - can set the tone for the entire day. As a wedding photographer, I’ve witnessed the beauty of both settings, while also coming to understand the differences it can make on the day and atmosphere.

So, let’s delve into the world of indoor and outdoor ceremonies, highlighting the pros and cons of each to help you choose the perfect backdrop for your special day.

The Indoor Canvas

Indoor ceremonies are like blank canvases. You can create any mood you desire, from romantic and intimate to vintage chic. But remember, styling is key! A minimally decorated space can leave your photos feeling flat. Talk to your stylist about achieving a balanced look that reflects your unique love story.

Indoor = Risk-Free (Almost!)

Here’s the beauty of indoors: no weather worries! Rain or shine, your ceremony goes on smoothly. Plus, you have access to power, air conditioning, and all the creature comforts you might miss outdoors.

For professional wedding photography, the controlled lighting environment can be a significant advantage. While natural light is a photographer’s best friend, creating a timeless and effortless feel, look for venues with large windows that flood the space with sunshine. If natural light is limited, it can affect your photos, but with our experience, we can advise on how to manage the lighting to enhance the overall look.

Indoor ceremonies also offer a sense of privacy, with no random passersby or photobombers—just your nearest and dearest sharing your special moment. However, this can also mean limited space, depending on the venue, so guest numbers and arrangements for children might require extra planning.

The Enchanting Outdoors

Outdoor ceremonies can be truly stunning, offering an atmosphere with breathtaking views and lush greenery that can’t be replicated indoors. Especially around the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast, where the landscapes are vast and verdant. For candid wedding photography, outdoor settings provide ample opportunities to capture the natural joy and emotions of your special day.

Choosing the right outdoor location is crucial and should depend on the time of year, as you can't predict the heat, wind, sun, or insects. Below, we discuss some ways to prepare for unpredictable weather!

Weatherproofing Your Big Day

Here’s some ways you can prepare for unpredictable weather:

  • Choose a time of year with minimal rain risk.

  • Have a stash of chic white or clear umbrellas on hand, just in case. (We always bring a few backups too!)

  • Summer weddings? Consider a later ceremony to avoid the harsh afternoon sun, or better yet, a shady spot under a tree or similar! Parasols and fans are lifesavers for your guests!

  • Have a wet weather option and ensure your backup indoor space is equally stunning, so a weather change doesn’t steal your joy.

Outdoor ceremonies often have more room to move around. This is perfect for larger guest lists or energetic little ones who might get restless during the ceremony.

With all that being said:

No matter what you choose, remember, it’s your special day. Embrace the vibe, the space, and the beautiful celebration you’ve put together! We can’t wait to capture the start of your forever journey, indoors or outdoors!

If you’re still feeling unsure- don’t hesitate to ask for your photographers opinion, we’re always here to serve you and ensure your day is the best it can be!
